Memere first learned how to make these soft & delicious cookies in 1971. I Saw the photo below on a fellow blogger's spot & the cookies look exactly like those that the older Italian ladies' taught Memere to make. The Italian ladies produced hundreds of these gems in a cramped 3rd floor kitchen preparing for a wedding. There were trays of cookies on every level surface available. I can still smell the fresh ingredients & hear the clattering of dishes. WHAT A SIGHT! Everyone was so busy making cookies no one thought of taking pictures.
